Ardvanderlinden painted on Plaza de Pumarejo. From the start many people were interested in the project and some joined painting immediately. Later when the field of Spanish flags was bigger, an interesting discussion started about the colours of the Spanish flag and its meaning. Some spectators changed the bottom stripe of the flag from red into indigo (a colour between blue and violet) and painted signs on the flags.
The history of the Spanish flag goes back to 1785 when the King of Spain adopted red and yellow (a combination of colours then used by no other country) to distinguish Spanish ships. The present pattern of the Spanish flag was established in 1927, but when Spain became republic in 1931 the bottom stripe became indigo. After the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) the original flag was restored.
We spread the message "unity through identity", people discussed and thought about their identity. We noticed that the Spanish flag is for a lot of Spaniards not a symbol they identify with. We removed the field of Spanish flags after someone from the audience made the following statemet: "We don't like the Spanish flags because it is a symbol of suffering and because it reminds us of the evil war and many fascists have used the flag against freedom. So could you please remove all this stuff from here?" It was a day with a lot of interaction with the people of Seville. Thomas Eagle and Margherita Bacigalupo made great pictures of the atmosphere.
