Hungary, Budapest, Városház Square, April 2010

On Városház Square Ardvanderlinden painted 1400 Hungarian flags on cardboard (about 300 m2) with the people of Budapest and foreigners. The red of the flag symbolizes strength, white represents faithfulness and green is symbolice of hope. Young (and maybe better English speaking) Hungarians reacted possitive and wanted more attention for the message 'unity through identity'. Older Hungarian people are more reserved, saying unity is an utopia. Young people believe in a world without borders. Ardvanderlinden thinks we should collaborate to reach unity; there are no reasons for distrust and suspicion. We are one humanity on one world!
Best quote of the day: "it is not an art work, it is hope."
Another quote: "Hungarians are not that proud of their flag because we have not won a war in 500 years". Ardvanderlinden thinks opposite: this is a reason to be proud. Wars are a waste of energy and are an insult to humanity.
Szarka Tamás, member of the legendary Ghymes band, wrote in Hungarian for our project:
A régi út
Ardvanderlinden keeps on questioning countries, borders and identity.

By: Bjert on: 2010-04-25 Een utopie, geen oorlog, geen grenzen, allen gelijk, allen... Liefs, Willemijn
